Unexpected Mold Discovery During a Routine Backflow Test
Excessive condensation causes black mold in poorly ventilated spaces
At Lake County Backflow, our primary focus is protecting your water supply through professional backflow testing. But every once in a while, we come across something outside our scope that’s important enough to flag—and today was one of those days.
While testing a backflow device at a customer’s home, we noticed a strong odor and signs of mold growth in an enclosed area near the plumbing. Upon further inspection, it appeared the mold was being caused by excessive condensation on the pipes. The likely culprit? A toilet running somewhere in the building, continuously introducing cold water into the lines and creating the perfect environment for moisture buildup.
Although mold detection and remediation isn’t part of our standard service, we believe in doing the right thing—so we made the homeowner aware of the issue right away.
This experience is a reminder that plumbing systems are all interconnected. Even something as seemingly minor as a running toilet can cause water waste, higher utility bills, and—in this case—hidden moisture problems that lead to mold.
Why This Matters:
Mold can cause structural damage and serious health issues if left unaddressed.
Enclosed spaces with poor airflow and high humidity are especially vulnerable.
Early detection can save thousands in repair and remediation costs.
